Since first becoming interested in radio as a child I have been a fan of Eddystone Radios and lusted after the famous EC10 for many years. The history of Eddystone Radio Ltd is complicated and numerous histories have been written. A good starting point if you are interested is the Eddystone User Group. The EUG website may be found here.
At one point I had a large collection of valve and semiconductor radios as well as accessories including loudspeakers, Edometers, signal strength meters and an absorption wave meter. Realizing that my children had no interest in such things I have now disposed of all but two radios – a model 940 which I use for listening to the broadcast bands and a maroon coloured S.870 which I use to listen to Radio 4 on Long Wave.
The model 940 is a general coverage HF / MF communications receiver. Released in 1962 it cost £106. I have found it to be very sensitive and excellent for general listening. I use it with the Type 906 Plinth Speaker.
The S870 was marketed for ocean liner passenger cabins and ‘cult domestic’. It has four wavebands and was priced at £34 16 shillings.
