Women make a very small proportion of the licensed amateur radio fraternity. Initially radio communication was by morse code. In order to speed up transmission rates, it was traditional to use abbreviations where possible (e.g. wx for weather). In amateur radio, women operators are referred to as YL’s, or Young Ladies. Or XYL’s if they are married.
