Northampton Rugby Football Club, known as The Saints, is one of the oldest rugby clubs in the country having been founded in the 1870’s by the curate of the local St James Church – Revd Samuel Wathan Wigg. The club was started as a boys’ improvement class and designed to let the area’s high-spirited boys let off steam in a constructive way. In the late 1880’s the Saints moved to Franklin’s Gardens, developing from a local pleasure park in the late 19th century to one of the finest rugby stadiums of the 21st century.
